AGAFAY DESERT & HIGH ATLAS MOUNTAINS From Marrakech

Departure to the Agafay desert, just half an hour drive away from Marrakech. For all those who haven't got enough time in Morocco to go for a Sahara tour, all the way south then the Agafay desert is an excellent alternative. The Agafay desert is not a sand desert - but more sandstone and earthen plateau. The landscape is made up of sandstone rocks and traditional villages built of pisé (earth and straw). We will take the road again through tracks and cross Berber villages. If you wish, you can get out of the 4X4 and go for a ride. You will also have the opportunity to take a camel ride. We will also stop for tea in a typical Berber village. We will take the road to Lake Lalla Takerkoust which is actually a lake formed by a hydraulic dam. It is a popular place for picnics by the water but also for horse riding or jet-skiing. Lunch will take place either in a restaurant by the lake or, if you prefer, in a Berber family in the Atlas. We will continue our excursion towards the plateau of Kik where we will stop for some refreshments and to take magnificent photos of the landscape. Finally, we will go down to the small city of Asni located at the foot of the Atlas Mountains (where a traditional souk is held on Saturdays). This tour offers visitors a wide variety of sceneries, such as the desert, the mountains, a lake, and valleys. All these atypical landscapes can be seen in a single day Distance 140 km DEPARTURE/RETURN LOCATION Marrakech DEPARTURE TIME Start at 9am - Finish at 4pm Duration 7 Hours INCLUDED Travelling in an air-conditioned vehicle with an English speaking experienced guide/driver. Explore Five beautiful valleys in the High Atlas Mountains, without having to worry about driving yourself, on this full-day guided tour. This The beautiful city of Essaouira and its enchanting fishing harbour. Essaouira is one of Morocco’s most ancient and most charming fortified port towns, which for centuries, has not only been one of the most important trading ports linking Morocco to the world, but also a magnet to artists, poets and musicians from all over the world. The town’s eclectic architecture reflects the influence of its multicultural history from the Phoenicians and the Romans, to the Portuguese and the French. Its whitewashed walls and blue shutters are reminiscent of Portuguese towns; its beautiful doorways are entirely Moroccan; while the medina and fortress, are a good example of 18th century French military architecture. It’s worth paying a visit to the Sidi Mohammed ben Abdallah Museum, which displays ancient artefacts, as well as some fine marquetry examples crafted from local Thuya wood, and jewellery and carpets. You may not be ready to climb its 13 671 feet yet (the hike up and down takes 2 to 3 days from Imlil) Don't worry: Imlil and your local English-speaking guide offer you beautiful hikes suitable for any level of fitness. The surroundings of Imlil are a real paradise on earth with its orchards of cashew nuts, cherry trees, raspberries, elderberries, apple trees and fig trees which supply the local Berber market of Asni on Saturdays. We then visit Ouarzazat, home to the Atlas Studios and dubbed "the Hollywood of Africa", where we'll stop for lunch near the Taourirt Kasbah an impressive palace of over 300 rooms and once owned by the ruthless tribal and political leader, el Glaoui. We continue on the road that has been dubbed "the road of a thousand Kasbahs", before stopping at Kalaat M'gouna, "the city of roses" where the roses are renowned for their heady scent and are harvested for the local perfume distillery. Sahara Camel Trekking Kingdom of sand and wind, the desert is a fabulous meeting place. An unforgettable experience, its power and infinite beauty take us somewhere deep within us ,opening us to all our surroundings, whether we are just passing through or staying. In the Sahara in southeastern Morocco, there is a village called el M'Hamid Ghizlane, which is 470km far from Marrakech. The paved road ends here! Like the time! It is here that our caravan starts. We borrow the bed of the Oued Draa and walk along the palm before entering the desert. Our secret hope to reach this distant line where sky and earth merge ... The stones of the hamada cry under our feet. The sun loves us a little more from hour to hour. We stop under a tamarisk tree planted in the middle of nowhere! Just the time to understand that one orange becomes the most precious on earth. The key is slowly replacing the superfluous, so that when we reach the sea of sand, we are ready, finally, to hear the silence ... As an echo of the starlight. Bread, sand and hot tea, we give the second breath needed to offer our bodies to dance before sleep, friend, convince us to follow up tomorrow ... SAMPLE CAMEL TREK TOURS from 1 night or 3 – to 6 days starting from Mhamid :   What you need to know for your Sahara Camel treks: Here is a checklist of things you need to know and things you will need to bring or buy for the trek:   The Treks • The Sahara camel treks run from October to April. • Please allow 1 day for travel to reach the desert from the start point and 1 day to return. • All our camel tours are full board and based on bivouac tents for two people. Tents and bedding with plenty of blankets are provided. • Daily trekking time is approximately five or six hours with plenty of rest stops and a long break for lunch in the shade.   What to Wear A long cotton scarf to wrap around your head is recommended if it is windy and the sand is blowing. You can buy a traditional Moroccan scarf for about 50-100 dirhams (depending on size) They do a great job keeping sand out of your hair, nose and eyes. It is more comfortable to wear longer pants when riding on camels. Between November and April, the desert can be very cold at night, so bring warm clothing for this time of year: sweater and jacket, hat and gloves; and in December, January and February particularly, you'll also need warm socks, long pants and a warm coat.   What to bring Make sure your bag is lightweight, tough and resistant; your main bag will be carried by camel. You will also need a smaller backpack for your daily trekking needs: Lightweight breathable T-shirts and shirts with long sleeves (to avoid sunburn). Lightweight pants
